Abstract
Benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) is a common disease, which affects male patients with incidence increasing with age. In recent years medical therapy for BPH has evolved, leading to postponement of surgical treatment. Alpha-blockers are considered first line treatment for patients with moderate to severe lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), while 5-alpha reductase inhibitors are prescribed in patients with moderate to severe LUTS and high risk of progression and acute urinary retention. Combination therapy is suitable for selected patients with LUTS and the choice of therapy depends on the main symptoms and risk of progression.
